Hurricane Laura Claims

Picture
On August 27, 2020, Hurricane Laura made landfall, battering Southwest Louisiana with the most powerful winds to affect our state in more than 150 years. Laura caused catastrophic property damage, ruining businesses and disrupting lives. It is going to take some time to recover, but now is the time to take action to ensure that you or your business can recover amounts that may be owed by your property insurance company to get you back on your feet.

Our Hurricane Laura Team at Couhig Partners has extensive experience representing both policyholders and insurers following past catastrophic events. We are uniquely qualified to understand what you need to do now to properly make a claim, how your insurer may respond to your claim, and how to make sure you obtain the full amount owed by your insurer in a timely manner.  Specific Louisiana laws protect policyholders by requiring insurance companies to timely initiate loss adjustment and take actions when provided with certain information, or risk the imposition of penalties that can be awarded to policyholders. A policyholder needs to understand these laws from the beginning of a claim in order to effectively exercise its rights.

Right now, you should
  • obtain copies of all of your insurance policies,
  • have an attorney from Couhig Partners review your policies to determine all potential coverages you have for losses,
  • give notice to your insurance company of your claim,
  • take pictures to document physical damage to your property and make copies of the pictures,
  • make a list of items that were damaged,
  • keep receipts for any expenses you have incurred as a result of the hurricane,
  • understand your duty to mitigate your losses, and
  • keep detailed records of interruptions for your business in any way associated with Hurricane Laura.
